Mit dem Firefox 8 wurde außerdem auch ein großer Schritt in Richtung „Silent Update“ gemacht. Mit diesem Projekt hat sich das Entwickler Team das Ziel gesteckt die Anwender nicht mehr bei jedem Update zu informieren und ihn mit aufdringlichen „What’s New“ Fenster zu nerven.

Zwar muss der User im Firefox 8 immer noch die Updates manuell zustimmen, aber er kann das „What’s New“ Fenster deaktivieren. Die Implementierung der „Silent Update“ Funktion soll dann in Firefox 9 und 10 folgen.

Den Download zu Windows 8 gibt es unter http://dev.microsoft.com als 32 und 64bit Version. Wer zusätzlich noch die Entwickler Tools wie Visual Studio 11 Express und Expression Blend 5 installieren möchte, der sollte sich für die für den ersten Download hier unten entscheiden, aber Vorsicht, während man die normalen 32- und 64bit Version von Windows 8 dazu nutzen kann eine bestehende Windows 7 Version zu aktualisieren, verlangt die Developer Tools Version eine Neuinstallation.

Bislang sprach offiziell Microsoft nur davon, dass Windows 8 etwa 24 bis 36 Monate nach Windows 7 erscheinen soll. Der Internet Explorer 9 Beta steht ab sofort zum Download zur Verfügung. Neben HTML5 Unterstützung hat der IE9 Beta auch in Sachen Geschwindigkeit und Sicherheit einiges zugelegt. Zum ersten Mal unterstützt der Internet Explorer 9 auch Hardware Beschleunigung um Webseiten schneller zu Rendern und somit dem User schneller präsentiert zu werden.

Leider ist ein Upgrade von Office 2010 Beta auf Office 2010 RTM nicht möglich (war bei Windows 7 auch schon). Wer trotzdem versucht die RTM über die Beta Version „drüber zu bügeln“ wird folgenden Warnhinweis erhalten:

Microsoft Office 2010 does not support upgrading from a prerelease version of Microsoft Office 2010. You must first uninstall any prerelease versions of Microsoft Office 2010 products and associated technologies

Solltet ihr eure E-Mail nicht über imap oder Exchange herunterlädt, achtet bitte darauf vor der deinstalltion eure PST Datei zu sichern, damit eure E-Mails nicht verloren gehen, auch wenn unsere Tests zu unserer Freude gezeigt haben, das nach einer Deinstallation der Beta Version und eine anschliessende Installation von Office 2010 RTM alle E-mails und Kontakte weiterhin vorhanden waren.

Der offizielle Start für Office 2010 erfolgt am 12. Mai 2010 unter the2010event.com. Ab Juni 2010 soll Office 2010 dann in den Handel kommen.

Microsoft hat seinen Fehler wieder gut gemacht und das Programm nun unter den richtigen Rahmenbedingungen veröffentlicht. Leider ist nun daraus ein typisches Microsoft Programm geworden das neben dem Installer noch andere Programme benötigt, wie zum Beispiel das .NET Framework und IMAPI, welche automatisch heruntergeladen werden, wenn diese nicht installiert sind.

Wie Peter Galli in seinem Blog erklärt:

I am very pleased to announce that Microsoft today released the Open Sourced Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (WUDT) under the GPLv2.

As we previously explained, the testing and localization took longer than we expected, but the project is now hosted on CodePlex.com, Microsoft’s Open Source software project hosting repository, and the code can be found here. 

The tool can also now be downloaded from the Microsoft Store here.

Also, as a result of some necessary changes, while the user experience of the tool will be the same as before, the install involves additional steps.
