Überraschend: Auf Version 2 folgt Version 4 – welche Hintergründe die übersprungene Versionsnummer hat, ist bislang nicht bekannt.

Die Beta-Version steht in einer 32- und einer 64-Bit Version zur Verfügung.
Der Download ist über das Portal Microsoft Connect möglich – eine Windows Live ID ist Voraussetzung:

Neben der ungewöhnlichen Versionsnummer 4 fällt außerdem auf, dass Microsoft die ohnehin schon sehr aufgeräumte Oberfläche des Programms abgespeckt hat.

So können die Standardaktionen bei einem Malwarefund nun nicht mehr vom Anwender beeinflusst werden. Außerdem wurde der Echtzeitschutz seiner Feineinstellungen beraubt – Microsoft Security Essentials überwacht nun offenbar standardmäßig alles.

Microsoft hat seinen Fehler wieder gut gemacht und das Programm nun unter den richtigen Rahmenbedingungen veröffentlicht. Leider ist nun daraus ein typisches Microsoft Programm geworden das neben dem Installer noch andere Programme benötigt, wie zum Beispiel das .NET Framework und IMAPI, welche automatisch heruntergeladen werden, wenn diese nicht installiert sind.

Wie Peter Galli in seinem Blog erklärt:

I am very pleased to announce that Microsoft today released the Open Sourced Windows 7 USB/DVD Download Tool (WUDT) under the GPLv2.

As we previously explained, the testing and localization took longer than we expected, but the project is now hosted on CodePlex.com, Microsoft’s Open Source software project hosting repository, and the code can be found here. 

The tool can also now be downloaded from the Microsoft Store here.

Also, as a result of some necessary changes, while the user experience of the tool will be the same as before, the install involves additional steps.
